Before calling a professional appliance technician service, there are a number of steps that you can take to save money and time. At Puget Sound Appliance Tech, we put together a few easy, common maintenance tips that you can do yourself with today’s home appliances. First read this list of typical problems – your problem may be listed!
Garbage Disposal
Most garbage disposals have a red overload protector button or switch on the bottom of the unit. When the garbage disposal becomes clogged, it will continue to run for several more cycles. However, over time, the unit will overheat, resulting in a shutdown. In this case, you’ll need to reset your garbage disposal. You will be able to diagnose this by taking a look under the sink and locating the switch or button on the unit. If the red button is popped out approximately a quarter of an inch, the overload protection feature was activated. In order to reset your garbage disposal, perform the following steps:
– Most importantly, make sure the kitchen switch to the garbage disposal is in the off position. The last thing you need is for the disposal to suddenly go on in the middle of the reset.
– Press the red button at the bottom of the unit. If it does not go in, wait a few minutes for the element to cool and try again.
– Once the button is in, turn on the kitchen sink faucet (cold only!) and turn on the kitchen switch to your garbage disposal.
– Your disposal should work after following steps 1-3. If not, there may be an issue with the overload protector, or another part of the garbage disposal may need to be serviced or replaced. For instance, if it hums but doesn’t properly spin, there may be a blockage or loose component. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call us or visit our Contact page.
Gas & Electric Stove
If your burner won’t light on your gas stove, first try cleaning the igniter. Pots and pans are notorious for boiling over, and because of this food/starch can build up and obstruct the contact surface on your igniter. To mitigate this, simply scrub the igniter with a toothbrush. If the food is really stuck on apply a little baking soda and water to the brush and try again.
If you have an electronic ignition stove, locate a small ceramic nub located either on the stovetop or under the ceramic seal strike plate and make sure it is clean of food residue. Additionally, check to see that the round ceramic seal strike plate is properly seated on the burner.
Gas Range Pilot Light
If your pilot light is out, follow these steps before calling in a professional appliance technician –
– Access the ignition system – pop the lid and look for it (usually hinged on the backside).
– If the flame is out, carefully poke a small hole through the opening with a needle to clean out any debris. Take care not to damage/ream it wider.
– Take a toothbrush and scrub off any soot and clean the tube that leads from the pilot to the burner.
– Relight the pilot.
Electric Range Burner Prongs
If the electric stove burner refuses to heat, there are a couple of steps you can take.
– Turn the burner off and pull it out from its socket.
– Plug it in again and wiggle it around. If it feels loose, go to step 3.
– Gently and carefully spread the burner prongs a little to create a tighter, better electrical connection.
– Take care not to push the whole socket out of its bracket.
Electric Oven Controls
One of the main problems with newer, more technologically advanced electric oven controls, is that they can run into programming issues.
– If your oven doesn’t heat, check the timer and clock settings.
– Check the “time cook” function. If your digital display reads “hold,” “delay” or “time cook,” then the timer is engaged.
– Clear it first by pushing the “off” button. On ovens with dials, be sure the knob is turned to “manual.”
Lights or Switches
Sometimes the electrical outlet that the appliance is connected to will short out. Try hitting the reset button on the outlet (if it has one), and if that doesn’t work, check your main electrical panel to see if there is a tripped circuit breaker. Also, before changing your appliance bulbs and switches, see if a GFCI outlet (which may be upstream from the troubled light or outlet) has tripped. If it is tripped, reset it. If this does not solve the problem, call us, as it could be a more advanced issue.
