Top 9 Reasons Your Samsung Dryer Won’t Start
Samsung dryers are one of our most common calls. In general, they are not only popular, but also reliable, however, like all appliances, they contain parts that can break or wear out over time or through heavy use. When one of those parts breaks or malfunctions, we’re here to get your laundry routine back on track. Whether it is an over-heated fuse, an obstruction in the blower wheel, or a defective timer, we have the parts and knowledge necessary to get your Samsung dryer working again.
In order to help us best diagnose your issue, let us know your Samsung dryer’s model number when making an appointment for a repair, as well as the symptoms your dryer is experiencing. This will help us troubleshoot the process more systematically and have the right replacement parts on hand.
Issue #1 – Your Samsung Dryer Won’t Start
When this occurs, you likely have already put wet clothing and linens in the dryer. Take them out and hang them on a line outdoors, or over the shower if it is raining. Next, whip out your smart phone and give us a call. We also have an online appointment form for your added convenience. We can help you diagnose the issue and have the correct parts on hand when we arrive to get your dryer working fast.
This brings us to the likely causes:
1 – Your Thermal Fuse Has Blown.
This safety device keeps your dryer from overheating. Before we replace a thermal fuse, we check the dryer venting, as a blown fuse can be caused by a clogged exhaust vent from the dryer to the outside. We would then locate the fuse on the blower housing. This would be the heating element on Samsung electric dryers or the burner on gas dryers. If your thermal fuse has a constant electrical path, it is okay and we’d diagnose another part, however if the electrical path is broken, we would replace the fuse as well as make sure that the exhaust vents aren’t clogged. This would help to avoid additional repairs in the future.
2 – Your Start Switch is Faulty
If the thermal fuse is not to blame, we would check the start switch. In order to diagnose this, we would try to start the dryer. If we hear a humming noise coming from your dryer, the starter switch is not the broken element, as it has continuity to the electrical element. If your dryer does not make any noise, the start switch could be the issue. In this case, we use a multimeter to test for continuity. If we do not detect this, we would replace the start switch that is specific to your Samsung dryer’s model.
3 – Your Door Switch isn’t Clicking
If your starter switch is making an audible hum, we would then move on to diagnosing the door switch. On most Samsung dryers, the door switch makes a sharp click when it is activated after you close the dryer door. If it makes this clicking sound it is likely not the culprit, however if we don’t hear the click, we would once again take out our multimeter and check for continuity. If we do not detect an electrical connection, we would replace the door switch that is specific to your Samsung dryer’s model.
4 – Your Drive Motor is Defective
After checking and diagnosing the thermal fuse, start and door switches, and not finding anything wrong, we would move on to the drive motor. This component is responsible for turning the drum and blower wheel so that air can be released through the exhaust. This would be in the case that the dryer makes an audible humming noise but does not turn on. We would remove the belt from the motor and monitor the blower wheel to check for any blockages. If we can’t find any, the dryer motor may be defective. Once we determine this, we would replace the dryer motor that is specific to your Samsung dryer’s model.
5 – Your Drive Belt Broke
After checking and diagnosing the thermal fuse, start and door switches, and drive motor and still not finding anything wrong, we would move on to the drive belt. In this case, your motor is running, but your drum isn’t rotating. This is a simple diagnosis, as the dryer belt will either be intact, or snapped. If it is broken, we would replace the drive belt that is specific to your Samsung dryer’s model.
6 – Your Belt Switch is Faulty
After checking and diagnosing the thermal fuse, start and door switches, drive motor and drive belt, and still not finding anything wrong, we would move on to the belt switch itself. If this switch isn’t properly connecting to the electrical elements, it will shut off the dryer even of the other parts above are in working order. Usually when it is working properly, it will produce a humming noise, if we don’t hear that noise, we would apply our multimeter to the switch and check for continuity. If we do not detect an electrical connection, we would replace the belt switch that is specific to your Samsung dryer’s model.
7 – You Have A Power Problem
Sometimes a “broken dryer” may not be broken at all and the main culprit is the outlet to the circuit breaker responsible for your dryer’s outlet. If you have a Samsung gas dryer, unplug it from the outlet and plug something else in to test whether it responds. In the case of a Samsung electric dryer, check your home circuit breaker and fuses and if they appear to be operating, you can use a multi-meter to test the outlet. In this case, we recommend an electrician, as your dryer is fine, but your outlet is damaged and needs to be replaced.
8 – Your Main Control Board is Defective
This is by far the scarcest reason for your Samsung dryer to not start. Before we recommend replacing the main control board, we would first check the thermal fuse, start and door switches, drive motor, drive belt, and belt switch. This is a difficult component to test, so we would rule out all of the above more likely causes mentioned earlier.
9 – Your Timer Broke
This is the least likely case, so we check it only of we’ve found that all the frequently faulty components are in working order. If we’ve determined that the thermal fuse, start and door switches, drive motor, drive belt, belt switch, outlet, circuit breaker, and main control board are not the cause of your issue, we would test the timer using a multimeter and consult the wiring diagram. If we do not detect an appropriate electrical connection, we would replace the timer that is specific to your Samsung dryer’s model.
