A refrigerator tripping the circuit breaker is one of the more alarming appliance issues you can run into. It usually strikes with no warning, sometimes taking out other appliances on the same circuit, and often happens during a heatwave or a long weekend when you least want to deal with it. The good news is that the underlying cause is almost always identifiable, and in most cases, repairable — but it does need to be addressed quickly. A breaker that keeps tripping is the electrical system telling you something is drawing more current than it should, and ignoring that signal can lead to a compressor failure, a house fire risk, or at minimum, a freezer full of spoiled food.

What It Means When a Refrigerator Trips the Breaker

A circuit breaker is a safety device. It senses when current exceeds a threshold (usually 15 or 20 amps for a standard kitchen circuit) and cuts power to prevent overheating and fire. When a refrigerator trips its breaker, the unit is drawing more current than the circuit is rated to carry. That excess current is coming from somewhere specific — and finding it is the whole diagnostic process.

There are really two patterns to pay attention to. First: does the breaker trip immediately when the refrigerator plugs in, or when it tries to start the compressor? Second: does it trip once every few hours, every few days, or intermittently with no clear pattern? Those patterns narrow down the likely cause significantly.

The Most Common Causes of Breaker Trips

1. A Short Circuit in the Compressor

This is the most serious and most common cause. The compressor is the refrigerator’s largest electrical load, drawing 6 to 10 amps while running and briefly spiking above that on startup. When the compressor windings start to short internally, the current draw climbs — sometimes gradually, sometimes all at once — until it exceeds the breaker rating. The refrigerator may run for a while, then trip. Next cycle it trips sooner. Eventually it trips the instant it tries to start.

Diagnosing this requires measuring the compressor windings with a multimeter and comparing the resistance to the factory spec for your model. A shorted compressor usually needs replacement — this is one of the more expensive refrigerator repairs, and for mainstream units over 10 years old, we often recommend replacement instead. For built-in Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Thermador refrigerators, the math almost always favors repair because those units are engineered to be serviced for 20+ years.

2. A Failed Start Relay

The start relay is a small component (often no bigger than a walnut) mounted to the side of the compressor. Its job is to kick the compressor from zero to full RPM in a fraction of a second. When the relay fails, the compressor tries to start, draws locked-rotor current (many times its normal amperage), and either trips the breaker immediately or causes the internal overload protector to cycle for hours.

Start relays are inexpensive parts and easy to replace once you know that is what failed — but diagnosing a failed start relay versus a failed compressor looks identical from the outside. An incorrect DIY swap of just the relay on a unit that actually has a shorted compressor will trip the breaker again within hours. A professional diagnostic visit will tell you which one it is in under 15 minutes.

3. A Failed Condenser Fan Motor

The condenser fan is the motor behind the refrigerator that blows air across the condenser coils. When the fan motor’s bearings start to seize, it draws more current than it should — sometimes enough to trip the breaker on its own, and always enough to force the compressor to work harder because the condenser is not dissipating heat. A seized or seizing condenser fan motor is a relatively inexpensive part to replace and is one of the more common calls we take for this symptom.

4. A Short in the Defrost Heater or Defrost Thermostat

Every self-defrosting refrigerator (which is essentially all of them made in the last 40 years) has a heater element inside the freezer compartment that melts ice buildup off the evaporator coil every few hours. When the heater element shorts to ground, it can trip the breaker the moment the defrost cycle starts. This pattern tends to be intermittent — the fridge runs fine for hours, then suddenly trips the breaker, then runs fine again after you reset it.

Diagnosing a shorted defrost heater requires opening the back panel inside the freezer and measuring the heater with a multimeter. Not especially difficult for a technician with the right tools, and the replacement heater is an inexpensive part.

5. A Damaged Power Cord or Wiring Harness

We occasionally find refrigerators with a pinched power cord (crushed against the wall) or an internal wiring harness chafed by a sheet-metal edge. Either can cause a short to ground that trips the breaker. These are visual-inspection finds on the diagnostic visit and usually a quick repair.

6. The Circuit Is Overloaded (Not Actually the Fridge)

Before we blame the refrigerator, we have to rule out the circuit itself. If you have a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, and refrigerator all on the same 15-amp kitchen circuit, adding the compressor startup load can exceed the breaker rating even though nothing is actually broken. National Electrical Code has required dedicated refrigerator circuits on new construction since the 1990s, but older homes (especially pre-1980 construction common in Seattle and older parts of Tacoma) often have shared circuits.

Easy test: plug the refrigerator into a different circuit (an extension cord to an outlet in another room works as a temporary diagnostic). If the breaker on the new circuit does not trip, the original circuit is overloaded and the fix is electrical, not appliance. If the new circuit also trips, the refrigerator itself has a problem.

What to Do Right Now If Your Fridge Is Tripping the Breaker

First, do not repeatedly reset the breaker. Each reset puts the circuit through another high-current event, and if the refrigerator has an actual short, you are risking damage to the wiring behind the wall.

Second, move the contents of the refrigerator and freezer to a cooler or a neighbor’s fridge to avoid food loss while you are waiting for service.

Third, try the other-circuit test above. If the refrigerator runs fine on a different circuit, the issue is your kitchen wiring and you need an electrician, not an appliance repair technician. If it trips the breaker on any circuit, you need a certified appliance technician.
