Most oven repairs we see could have been avoided with ten minutes of monthly maintenance. An oven is a simple appliance by modern standards — it heats a cavity to a target temperature and holds it there — but the components that do that work are exposed to extreme heat, grease, and cleaning chemicals every time you cook. Proper oven maintenance extends the life of the igniter, the door gasket, the thermostat, and the control board, which is where the expensive failures happen.
This guide walks through the specific maintenance steps we recommend to customers across Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, and the rest of the Puget Sound. These are the habits that reliably keep an oven running for 15 to 20 years, based on what we see in the field every day.
Clean the Oven Cavity Regularly (But Carefully)
Spilled food inside the oven is not just unsightly — it carbonizes at high temperatures, smokes, and over time coats the temperature sensor and interior bulb socket. A temperature sensor covered in carbon will report low, which causes the oven to over-fire and burn your food on the outside while the interior stays under-cooked.
The Right Way to Clean
Use a paste of baking soda and water. Spread it on the inside of the cold oven, let it sit overnight, then wipe it off in the morning with a damp cloth. For stubborn carbonized spots, a non-abrasive scrubber works. Avoid oven-cleaning chemicals with lye (sodium hydroxide) on self-clean ovens — the residue can damage the porcelain enamel and, in rare cases, the pyrolytic gasket.
About the Self-Clean Cycle
We get mixed feelings on this one. Self-clean cycles work by heating the cavity to around 900°F to turn residue into ash. They do clean, but they also put significant stress on the door latch motor, the oven gasket, and the control board. On older ovens, we actually see a spike in control board failures in the weeks following a self-clean cycle. Our recommendation: use self-clean no more than once or twice a year, and manually clean the rest of the time.
Inspect and Replace the Door Gasket When It Wears
The door gasket is the silicone or fiberglass seal around the oven door opening. It keeps heat in. When it hardens, cracks, or flattens, heat escapes — and the element runs longer to maintain set temperature, which increases your energy bill and shortens the element’s life.
Check your gasket every six months. It should feel soft and springy. If you can see gaps when the door is closed, or if you feel a noticeable stream of hot air escaping while the oven is on, replace it. This is a straightforward part that seats into a channel around the door frame. OEM gaskets from the original manufacturer fit correctly; off-brand universal gaskets often do not seat properly and cause the same problem within months.
Keep the Door Hinges Clean and Aligned
Oven door hinges take a beating. Every time you open the door while holding a roasting pan, the hinge absorbs a load. Over years, this causes the springs to lose tension, which leads to a door that sags, does not close flush against the gasket, or falls open on its own.
Wipe the hinge points monthly and keep them free of grease buildup. If you notice the door no longer closes fully on its own, it is time for a hinge replacement. Do not ignore this — a door that does not close flush makes the gasket work harder, and accelerates every other heat-related wear issue on the oven.
Check the Temperature Calibration Annually
Ovens drift. A unit that was calibrated perfectly from the factory can be 25 to 50 degrees off from its displayed temperature after a few years of use. That is a common reason customers tell us their oven “stopped working right” — it is not actually broken; it is just out of calibration.
Test this with a standalone oven thermometer placed on the middle rack. Set the oven to 350°F, let it preheat for 20 minutes, and check the thermometer. If it reads more than 25 degrees off, the oven needs calibration. Most modern ovens have a user-accessible calibration offset in the control panel (consult your owner’s manual), but if yours does not or if the offset does not hold, the thermostat or temperature sensor itself may need service. This is a common repair that we complete in a single visit.
Avoid Lining the Bottom With Foil
We know this is controversial, but we have seen enough damaged ovens to feel strongly about it. Aluminum foil on the oven floor blocks heat circulation, can melt and permanently bond to the porcelain enamel, and on gas ovens, can cover the flame ports and cause incomplete combustion. Use oven-safe drip trays on a lower rack instead, or invest in a set of silicone oven liners designed for the purpose.
Ventilate and Monitor Electrical Connections
Ovens are designed with a vent at the back or top to release combustion gases (gas ovens) and heated air (electric ovens). Do not block this vent with pots, stored items, or cabinet overhangs. A blocked vent forces heat back into the control panel area, which is the leading cause of control board failures we see in ovens under 10 years old.
Also, every two or three years, have an electrician or qualified appliance technician check the wall receptacle and the oven’s power cord for signs of heat damage. A browned or melted receptacle is a serious safety issue that should be addressed immediately.
Watch for the Warning Signs of an Oven Repair
Regular maintenance dramatically reduces the chance of a breakdown, but it does not eliminate it. Watch for these warning signs and call a technician before small issues become expensive ones: uneven heat (front vs back, top vs bottom); longer preheat times than usual; the oven losing temperature mid-bake; visible sparking or arcing near the bake element; a gas oven that clicks repeatedly before lighting (igniter going weak); or any unusual smell coming from the unit.
When any of these show up, schedule an oven repair diagnostic sooner rather than later. Early diagnosis almost always means a cheaper repair.
